Trivia

Dave also paid homage to Steve Allen in a series of stunts modeled after Allen's jumps into tubs of Jell-O. In the most memorable one, Letterman wore a Velcro suit and stuck himself to a wall. In another he wore a suit covered in Alka-Seltzer tablets and jumped into a 1,000 gallon tank of water. In a suit of tortilla chips, he jumped in a tank of yogurt dip. He even tried a suit of Rice Krispies so he could snap, crackle, and pop. Each stunt was followed by a slow-motion replay. Other stunts were just goofy, juvenile ideas made hilarious by Letterman's pervasive anarchic attitude. See more »

Quotes

Larry "Bud" Melman: Good evening. Certain NBC executives feel it would be a little unkind to present this show without just a word of friendly warning. We're about to unfold a show featuring David Letterman, a man of science who sought to create a show after his own image -- without reckoning upon God. It's one of the strangest tales ever told. I think it will thrill you. It may shock you. It might even horrify you. So, if any of you feel that you don't care to subject your nerves to such a strain, now's your ...

David Letterman eats Conan O'Brien for breakfast
20 July 1999 | by Liz-59See all my reviews

While Conan does have one of the best shows on TV now, David Letterman's original Late Night talk show is what created it all. This is where such classic things like "Stupid Pet Tricks" and "The Top Ten List" were born. Dave knows what people want to laugh at, and from that show he did it all, like once leaving an audience member as host for nearly the entire show while he "looked for his fake teeth" and other great things. David Letterman's current show may get more viewers, but this one should never be forgotten.
